Impossible modification gilera 350?

Hello Gileristi
First thank you for existing, I have been reading your forum for a while and found a lot if interesting info.
I hope you will be able to help me.
I have recently bought a Dakota 350 with broken engine. With the bike came a 600 engine that I was told was just to fit in.
But there are several problems, the main one is the ignition.
The 350 engine has "inductive"? ignition and the 600 "capacitative"?
The 350 sensor has 2 cables and the 600 3 cables.
My question, is it possible to adapt without changing the hole electric system?
My idea is to change the generator rotor from the 350 to the 600 together with the complete cover and the sensor but the crankshaft end diameter is different.
To do that I would have to have the center of the rotor of the 350 cut out and reweld it on the 600 rotor.
Do anyone know if this is possible?
Is there any morr things to modify? for instance ar both covers the same ?
Or is there an easier solution??
Thank you for any comments, suggestions or advices.
Thomas

Hello,
What you write about changing the rotor
sounds very complicated to me,wouldn't
be easier to change the blackbox an the ignitioncoil?
Georg :?:

What is broken on the 350 engine?
If only the top end is defective you may change the piston, the cylinder and maybe the head.
All will fit to the 350 case... i think ;)
It must be the same as the 500 case.
So you will only ned to turn down the diameter of the 600 cylinder neck to make it fit to the small case.
Think also about the carb, the inlet and the air box.
The 600 head will have something bigger.

The flywheel is fixed with rivets. You may drill them out and fix the bigger part of the 600.
Another solution would be to make a bigger conical hole into the flywheel of the 350 engine.
The side covers are nearly the same (AFAIK)
The small cover above the flywheel looks different, but both versions fit to the engine case.

Are you able to read german?
If yes... search the forum for 'Saturno tuning' or '-auf Wunsch des Beitragserstellers geloescht-'

good luck, joachim

Joachim is absolutely right. Just machine out the conical hole in the flywheel to the exact same dimension as on the 600 flywheel and use the 350 pick-up, ignition system and cover. You also have to remove a little material from the woodroof key to make sure it is seated correctly on the conical shaft. I have used such a combination on my Saturno 600 for a couple of years. The 350 flywheel is also a bit lighter than the 600.

It is also possible to mount the 600 cylinder to the 350 crankcase after machining the skirt of the cylinder to a smaller diameter, but you have to consider the compression ratio as the stroke of the 350 moter is smaller than the 500 and 600 motors. And of course you will not get the full 551cc. The conrod is the same lenght on all motors.

Good luck
Christian

That seems to be the esasiest solution, but have you considered that if I machine out the conical hole on the 350 flywheel (bearing in mind the cranckase end is smaller) there will be very little metal left, maybe not enough to resist?
I am also considering to install an universal electronic ignition keeping the original flywheel (modified)
I' ll let you know
And thank you for your help.
