Danke nochmal!
Gruss,
Erik

This is my project motorcycle. It is a 1965 202 Super that is the U.S. scrambler variant. As far as I know, either the Factory or the Gilera Dealer in Salt Lake City, Utah, made the scrambler modifications. The front fender and brace are not mounted at the moment.

I am new to Gileras and to this club. I have a general question about my Super 202 Scrambler. Does the bike have a switch that turns the lights on and off? There were 2 plastic pieces on the top of the headlight bucket that may be switches, or maybe they are only indicator lights. Can someone educate me about their purpose? I don't want to damage them, especially if they are switches. The wiring, lights and fuses inside the headlight appear to be original and undamaged. Thank you!

Hi,
the lights on a Gilera are normally switched with the key (or a rotary switch) that has three positions: no light, parking light and driving light. Low and high beam is done with a switch on the handlebar. The two plasic things on your lamp are most probably indicator lights for generator (charging of battery) and light. Why don't you open the bucket and check what you find inside? I've not seen such an arrangement of speedo, key switch etc. before, maybe it was like this only for the US market...
Greetings
Malte

Thank you Malte. This is the inside of the bucket - I expected to find a snarl of wires, but instead, I found a well- organized terminal block. While working on the forks today, I noticed a small toggle switch on the bottom of the headlight bucket - maybe this will turn the lights off when the engine is running. I will also look for the high beam switch as you suggested.

Hi Owen,
do you have any documentation for the bike? At rpw.it there is only an incomplete parts catalog for the 202 model.
Without a schematic it is hard to say what that switch is for. I know that some italian bikes of that era (at least Ducati) had a weird electrical system where the power of the ignition coil was also used for the tail light. If that bulb blew also the ignition would stop working. Therefore, an emergency switch existed that would bridge the tail light bulb and enable ignition again. I don't know where that switch was located (maybe near to the tail light?). Also, such a system was used only on bikes with flywheel magneto (not generator). The parts catalog shows a generator for the 202, but your US model may be different. My 124 FL Speciale Strada (from Sears US) is also different from the European 124 models. So there are many question marks...
Regards, Malte

Thank you again, Malte. No, I have only the downloaded parts catalog you noted, and a general motorcycle repair manual from 1972 that includes a few pages on Gileras and other lesser know brands. By experimenting, I concluded that the small toggle switch on the bottom of the bucket shuts off the lights (possibly not the brake light though). I found the high beam switch, which was missing its knob, and was hard to see. Today I disassembled and refreshed the forks and steering head. I have a few more tasks and then I will call this rescue operation complete: horn repair (it clicks but doesn't buzz), fix brake light switch or bulb, replace fuel taps, replace cracked speedometer glass, replace seat cover, add mud flap.

Very good! Just out of curiosity: does you bike have a generator (like shown in the parts catalog) or a flywheel magneto?
(I also saw in the catalog that your headlamp bucket is 'normal'.)

Mine has a generator; the little switch we talked about seems to cut power to the entire bike. It might be a security measure, since it's quite hidden under the headlight bucket. The new seat cover is installed, new fuel taps, and it runs well. It has good compression, and it's a fast little machine. My pictures are too large to upload, and I don't know how to decrease the size, unfortunately.
