N-W engines in Saturno's

Post by kano nordi » Thu Jun 23, 2011 6:41 pm

Hi all, + copy to Bob Wright sent 21st June
This for those who have fitted a N-W engine, or cylinder head to a Saturno and who are still using the Saturno mechanical rev counter.
I have bought the ex John Rushworth Norturno, which he built up with a N-W engine, naked without a fairing and using an Elliot electronic rev counter and bicycle speedometer.
I am fitting a fairing back onto the bike and have a new/old stock set of clocks, but the Nordie engine has no provision for the mechanical rev counter drive off the exhaust cam. The cam cover has a boss where the drive would be fitted, but I suspect there would be not be a worm gear on the end of the camshaft.
So have any of you fitted mechanical rev counters to N-W engines, Gottried are all the bits available and how much,
If I stay with the Elliot rev counter (which I do like) anybody need a set of new Saturno clocks?
Kind regards
John

The 'normal' way to replace the Saturno engine by a Nordie engine is somehow different ;)
Buy a Nordie engine. Remove the cylinder head. Switch the Nordie valves and cams to the Saturno head. Remove the rev counter gear from the Saturno outlet cam and mount it to the Nordie cam.
Make the Saturno head fit to the bigger bore.
Plug in the Nordie engine with the Saturno head back into the Saturno frame.

Most of the guys out there did it this way.
Due to the small frame it is not possible to mount the Nordies carbs.
Now you can use the single Saturno carb.
If i remember right, John has done something to the frame. This may be not road legal (depends on your local laws)
If you can get hand on a Saturnos outlet cam (XRT has a mechanical rev counter to?)
you can use the driving tooth wheel. Next would be to get the hole at the right place.
If you can do this....
If not...
Maybe it is possible to replace the mechanical inside of the Saturno rev counter by the electronical parts from a Nordies rev counter.
That would be a nice challenge, wouldn't it ;)

Hi Joachim,
John Rushworth modified the frame and put the N-W engine fitted with 2xKeihin CR carbs.
The frame mods are very well done and as I'm the #6 owner and nobody complained about the handling I don't think there are any problems with it.
We don't have local laws about frame modifications giggle If you could see some of the vehicles on the roads of Africa you don't know if to laugh or cry
I will see if anybody is selling the bits before I decide to fit the Saturno clocks.
Cheers
John
