Resurrection of a Gilera SP02 125cc
HI
Im from South Africa and have managed to pick up a Gilera SP02 125 2 stroke,
The motor has been seized and i have imported pistons from europe and replaced the small end, big end bearing and conrod still seem great,
I have now replaced it with the new piston,
If anyone is able to tell me what spark plug i should be running? And how i would know if its derestricted?
Also any sort of service or workshop manual in any language would be great.
Unfotunately there is not much on these bikes on the net, So Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Cant wait to get this beast running, Its been standing for a few years and would be amazing to get this running in South africa as not alot of ppl are aware of Gilera.
Thanks

Hi
maybe this could be somehow usefull for you.
It's for the SP01 but the engine is nearly the same.

If you get something better... please drop me a note.
It turns out that i have nothing about the SP02
ciao Joachim

Is any way of telling if it is a sp02 or whats the difference between the sp02 and gfr?
The papers say its a runner so i know that is not right,
But not to sure as to what it is now?

Re: Resurrection of a Gilera SP02 125cc
SP01, SP02 and Crono are nearly the same.
At least the frame should be the same.
The SP01 has a standard fork, the SP02 and the Crono both have a upside down fork.
What may cause problems on those 3 are the tires.
SP02 and Crono have 16 inch front tires and 17 inch rear tires. If i remeber right the SP01 has a 18 inch rear tire.
16 and 18 inch are not modern tire sizes any more. So you may have troubble to get good tires.
The GFR and CX have 17 inch rims front and rear.
Beside this the GFR has a mono rear swing arm and the CX also a mono front fork.
Engines are also not very different. All are watercooled cylinders with inlet in the engine case.
Luigi has modified the carb and some other things and claimed every year some more horses.
The pistons of the GFR and CX engines are not interchangeable with those from the SP models.
They only fit together with the rod. As far as i remember the rod is a little bit shorter at the GFR CX engines.
So the piston is somehow longer.
Beside this there are no problems to swap a complete engine from a GFR into a Sp and the other way round.
Your SP02 looks a little bit custom made
The seat fairing is from a Mito i think. The seat also is not original.
The passenger foot rests are removed.
The driver foot rests also look somehow modified.
have fun, Joachim

Re: Resurrection of a Gilera SP02 125cc
Thank you again,
I was a bit worried has i had changed all the piston with a SP02 piston,
But then its all good,
The tail piece does look like its from a mito, But i dont mind, Still gives it a nice shape.
Any ideas with with what exhaust i can replace it with? As this one looks like a home made job and not to sure it will cause issues.
Thank you again for all the help

Oh yes... i have forgotten the exhaust
We have a member named Gottfried (www.hahne-power.de)
He is selling new and used Gilera parts at reasonable prices.
You may give him a chance
ciao Joachim

Yeah i have seen his site, I managed to import the pistons and conrods, But exhaust may be a bit more,
As i live in South Africa, There is obviously problems getting the parts couried not to mention pricy, So was wondering i the were specifications i could take to a custom exchaust shop, or even Use a rgv or mito exhaust?
Thank you

Re: Resurrection of a Gilera SP02 125cc
I've tried to open the air filter to clean it, but bviously from standing for some time as i pick it up its starting to crumble,
Is there a aftermarket foam filter for the SP02 like eg K&N...? Or would have to try get an original filter?
Is it possible to not use that air filter box? maybe getting another air filter?

Re: Resurrection of a Gilera SP02 125cc
oh yes... i know
Maybe there still are some new filters out there... maybe.
I have made a new one from a uni filter mat of TwinAir using the plastic frames of the old filter.
The SP02 filter looks the same as my GFR one.
So if you cannot get something else, this may also be a solution for you.
Of course you also can use somthing from K&N. There is much room for a big filter beside this small engine
Be carfull not so size your new piston
ciao Joachim
PS those filter mats are available in Off Road shops

Re: Resurrection of a Gilera SP02 125cc
Yip, I was thinking the same, Maybe see if i can get uni filter and cut it to size, I think thats the best option here as i will struggle to even find something for a GFR,
Also If i change to a K&N filter which would be my 2nd option, Would i need to then re jet the carb?
Thanks

Have found 2 part numbers on the air box if that helps, The air inlet side has Part number: 943461 on the inlet pipe
The outlet side to the carb has Gilera DIS 943661 on the outside of the case.
Not sure if this will help or if anyone would be able to find out from what gilera this airbox is from, Might be easier then to find a filter.
Also then if its from a different bike how could i tel if the carb has been re-jetted?
Thanks

Re: Resurrection of a Gilera SP02 125cc
Well Just an update,
Ive managed to pick up some Air Foam filter sheeting which ive cut to size,
So hopefully that will do the trick.
Have cleaned the carb and jets and and oiled the air filter, So hopefully when this weather clears up
Ill be able to put it back together and give it a swing.
Am i able to change a to premix with still leaving the 2 stroke pump on engine? maybe just blocking the the feeder pipes? I know alot of people say to rather use the oil pump if its working, But im a little skeptical about it, as the previous owner kept going through pistons apparently. So i would feel safer to premix.
Thanks
