Saturno questions

Hi there,
I am interested to by a Saturno, or enough bits to build one using my spare 558 engine.
please can anyone tell me are there any other differences between 350 and 500 models apart from the engines bore and stroke,
Has anybody built an engine using using the 350 - 69.4 stroke and a 558 - 98 bore cylinder?

Engines are "near" the same! Only one difference; the head, so it`s difficult to put in a NW/RC-head. It gives 2 methodes to fit it! (556cc-Engine).

1. to take a 500-head, must be modified!

2. to take a NW/RC-head, there you must cut/change the frame! ( some welding-work) .

Engines/houses/(incl. gear-box) cyl./piston/heads I have.

Thanks for that, I knew the frame had to cut to fit twin carbs on the 558 heads, some have fitted single carb with Y branch inlets, I just wanted confirmation that 350 - 5oo & 558 bottom ends were the same apart from the 350 shorter stroke, now all I need is a rolling chassis or a complete bike??

Hi

the main bearings of the smaller engines are also smaller than the ones of the 600ccm engines. So you cannot interchange the flywheels between the engines.
Beside this there are 2 versions of the small engines out there.
The later cases are 'reinforced'
You can see this at the rear engine mount bolts. The case is a bit thicker at this place.
So if you want to use a 600ccm cylinder it might be better if you have the later engine case.
If i remember right, the big cylinder did not fit into the case of the small engine.
You have to make the hole in the case bigger, or turn down the neck of the cylinder.
The later one is ok for 98mm cylinders. If you want to go to 100mm or bigger you should chose the first solution.
I would suggest to use also an 600ccm engine case and replace only the head (like Gottfried says, best with Nordie, RCC or RCR valves and cams)
Or to modify the frame. Depends on your local laws

Hi Joachim,
Do you have any idea when the 350 got stronger cases? there is a 1988 350 for sale in the Uk and look from photo's to be in a good condition with low kilometers, I was most interested in possible differences in frames, brakes & suspension between 350 & 500,
We don't have laws 'just chaos' for anything in Nigeria, if you want to cut your frame go ahead!! no Tuv.
I can pick the bones out of technical German articles, I'm used to working with German industrial machines, manuals and engineers, just don't ask for a conversation about weather religion or politics??

Hi Joachim,
Thanks for the photo's, I think I may have found a Saturno fitted with a twin Nordie engine for sale, which is good as I keep my spare engine as a spare.
I'll keep you posted if I'm successful, I hope it's not too cold over there, a bit fresh here early in the morning at 17c but will be around 32c by midday, enjoy

You know that this ist the famous John Rushworth Norturno?
You also know that pic from John doing a long wheely which is titled....
would you buy a bike from this guy?

Hi Joachim,
I found a little of the history of John Rushworth's Norturno and how he fell off at the Morini track day at Cadwell Park, (super track) some years back breaking the fairing, which was never replaced, the bike then went to Pete Fisher and then to Paul Adams.
My 1st step to Saturno ownership was to buy an old stock new fairing, screen and clocks from Bob Wright, which have been collected by Paul a couple of days ago.
The cheque is going by DHL courier to Paul today, so all being well I should be a Saturno owner in about 7 days time, but wont get to see it in Kano for at least 1 or 2 months.
I will just have to continue playing with the Nordie and Morini till then.
I have not seen Johns wheely photo, better send me a copy, but is too late to change my mind.

seems to be that i also did not have the pic
Maybe i have seen it in an old issue of the GeN.
Beside this the wheely wasn't done with the Nortuno.
AFAIR John had put a Honda CBR600 engine into the empty chassis of the Nordie he bought to get the engine.

I have pictures of the the Norturno when in the hands of 72degrees and the last owner before I bought it, no action shots from the time it was with John Rushworth!!
