GFR - SP01 SP01 pistons ?

Hi there, I read that the SP01/02 piston is not the same as the GFR125 ?
Can anyone confirm this ?? if so what are the differences between the 2 pistons ?

Also has anyone got a parts book for the GFR125 ?
Thanks Paul

No they are not the same.

The rod of the GFR engine is a bit longer (shorter?). Therefore the piston is also different.

Thanks for the reply Joachim, i have just brought 2 GFR125 and the one is supposed to have a SP02 engine in?

The one with the SP02 engine has a mechanical powervalve rather than a electronic type one. Is there any way to tell the difference between the 2 engines from the out side?

Do you know is Gilera used engine numbers to identify the years ?

Thanks Paul

wasn't it a SP01 Engine?

On the RH side of the engine you can see the cover of the APTS.
If it's metall and the same grey as the engine so it's a mechanical system.
The electrical version has a clear plastic cover.
There also is a solenoid on the back of the frame and a cable to the valve at the cylinder(still mounted at yours but not connected)
And of course the black box under the seat.

Not sure if it is SP01 or SP02 Engine, the seller listed it as a SP01 it does have the metal APTS cover on.

Since our last message i have taken the engine out of the frame and took the cylinder off only to find it has had a cast iron sleeve fitted (not by me) and a Yamaha TZR125 piston at 57.90mm bore !!.

I also believe they have skimmed some of the base of the cylinder to make this piston work; this is not good news as i was hoping for a std cylinder and piston so i can compare the parts.
I did not want to take the engine apart from the running bike (which i know is a GFR engine) but it looks like i may have to.

Progress is slow on my GFR125 as i have not had much time to spend on it but i have made and fitted a new con rod crank.

However i have started to add GFR parts to my web site, i don’t expect to sell much as there is little or no call for Gilera GFR parts but i like the bikes and that is why i have added parts to my site.

You have the parts and the skills to rebuild GFR crankshafts?
Nice ;)
I have a spare engine whic hi would like to plug into my GFR frame because the engine which is mounted at the time is leaking oil.
The engine was tanding some time without the cylinder. Looks like there was a little bit of water running in.
So i'm not shure if i can trust the crank bearings. The main bearings are not a problem, but the big and small end bearings....
I don't know if there are any needle bearings for the GFR are available.
Maybe you know :)

ciao Joachim

PS the GFR piston is a ASSO W 2829. Got mine from Bob Wright.
There are also GOL pistons out there for the GFR. I would have a look at home to get the right number. But they are listed in their catalog. For the SP models there are also pistons available.

Yes i have the Skills to rebuild the crank, been doing them for 22 years now *thumb*

There is no direct fit conrod for the GFR so i had to make one up using a Yamaha rod and have new crank pin made, the rod is much better than the Gilera one i have also fitted it with a TZ race big end bearing.

As for your crank, if the rust has got to the big end bearing then the rod will also be rusty, i will try and get some photos of my crank on here soon.

Regarding the pistons, i have had on order with Vertex the SP 01 /2 piston but as yet we have no stock but i hope soon to have them in the UK.

Best regards Paul

Niiiece :)
But you should grind away this 'Made in Japan' giggle

Is the rod for the GFR engine or for the SP one?
As far as i remember the length of both is different.
I think i should inspect my crank next weekend ;)

ciao Joachim

PS i will get in touch with the guy who tried to get a replica screen for the GFR made.
He has the moulds for the complete GFR fairing made. Maybe he would like to have some screens.

Hi

no GFR replica screens available :(

If you plan to get some made you may ask Bob Wright or Gottfried at Hahne-Power if they need something.
Beside this i got the hint to use the screen of a Ducati SS from 91 to 98.
This one could be made to fit with not too much work.
No details, but it might be worth a try.

Lol the Made in Japan rod is far far better than the Gilera one!! Not sure about the SP rod bearing different, i have not got one to compare them but the GFR 125 is 110mm centre to centre.

Still got to make my mind up about the screens, will let you know when i have got all the ££ figures sorted

I will have a look at home next weekend.
I should have a SP crankshaft beside my spare GFR shaft. So i could compare.
As far as i have seen there is a Gielra number on the shaft.
Maybe i'm able to disassemble the shafts to get a better measurement.

problem is, that the SP crankshaft is soemhow different to the GFR one.
As far as i know, only the conrod is a bit longer (shorter?)
Therefore a SP shaft wont fit in a GFR engine.
But with the Y****a conrod shown here, it would be an ease to make a GFR shaft from a SP shaft. *If* all the other dimension are the same on both shafts.
I don't know about this.
But as i have both shafts at home, i can check this. Next week...
