1993 Gilera GFR 125 build thread (serbia style)

Post by CokiGFR125 » Sun Jan 30, 2011 10:30 pm

So this is mine as i like to call it piece of crap GFR , bought it for 0,00 euros (you can imagine in what shape it is) ,
but i have a strong will , know how and the time to make this heap of junk into i shiny new GFR.
Where to start ? Let`s see , at the beginning .

I`ve took the time to make a 200 km trip to Belgrade (capital of Serbia) , and to pick up this once beauty ,
and this is how it looked when i brought it home (to my workshop) :

Image

Image

And iv`e decided to start working on it wright away , the first thing i did was to pull the motor out and see what`s inside:

Not the cleanest motor but , anyhow this is it:
Image

Motor pulled out :
Image

Image

you can see on this picture that i don`t have the ignition cover nor the chain cover.
Image

After pulling down the head and cylinder i found something very disturbing.
A whole piece of piston was missing , piston rings shot :
Image

Cleaned the rest of the motor
Image

Then i started working on the frame and disassembly the rest of it.
Iv`e noticed some rust here and there and wanted to sort i out , i simply hate the rust issues .
Torn apart every single thing on the bike , classified all the pars in one place , took some time with the angle grinder
on it and this is the result so far:
You be the judge ...

These are some of the larger parts that iv`e could not pack in a box.
Image

And here are the rest of the stuff , small parts , handle bars , wiring loom etc...
Image

Rear swing arm stripped from paint , cleaned , waiting for the rest of the frame to be stripped from paint and cleaned for painting.
Image

Naked frame:
Image

Stripping and cleaning the frame , removing the paint and rust from it.
As all of you know the battery acid spills are a nasty thing.
So much rust from it.
Image

Image

And in the meantime (when i`m resting from all of the grinding) i took some time to fix my rev counter:
The glass was missing so i made a new one and this is how it looks.
Image

And after iv`e installed the new glass and done some wiring
Image

This is it for now , i`ll be posting some more photos when i paint the swing arm and frame.
Wish me good luck with this project...

Looks like a normal GFR ;)
But the price was ok.
On the other hand... looks like you have some experience with rusty vehicles.
Ford Taunus 17M

What looks a bit strange to me is the piston. That's *not* the original GFR piston.
Can yo have a look to the inside.
There you should find 'ASSO W 2829'
The bottom is marked with an arrow, CX and the mentioned letter for the diameter.

Good luck :)

8) Yes the 1966 17m P5 , my restoration from 2006 , i`m in a Capri project now ...
http://www.fordclubserbia.org/forum/vie ... taunus+17m
Project 17m topic (on serbian , but a lot of pictures)

Mk1 Capri project (also on serbian but a lot of photos, much more then the 17m)
http://www.fordclubserbia.org/forum/vie ... f=6&t=7157

On this topic , there are no markings on the piston , so i guess it`s not an original.
Anyone has an photo of the original piston ?
Also it does not look like a normal GFR , look at the front and rear wheel ...
I`m willing to trade my front wheel for an original one.

Anyhow iv`e primed the rear swing arm for painting , pictures maybe later or tomorrow .

Good luck for this challenge ;)

That's what a quick search for the piston found on my harddisc.
Next weekend you can have some more pics.
I also have a standard and a 'big bore' piston from GOL (if i remember right)
They still sell them. But quality might not be very god. I have heared very different statements about this. So risc was to high for me.

Always nice to follow a big "restauration".
Hope you can find all the missing pieces.
I'm sure that Marco (forummember) can help you a lot too.
Best of luck *thumb* *thumb*

Joachim thank you for the pictures , i`m now sure that the piston is not an original one ,
and it would be odd because this is serbia and the bike has 27000 km on it.
At some point of it`s life it had to die.
Anyhow i`ll try to contact Marco for the piston issue , i mean getting a new one.
Or maybe you can help me with that also , i have a friend in Germany and you can send the
piston to him and he will bring it over to me.

@Geert
Thank you my good man , i also hope i can fix all of the loose ends ....

@Eokotopia
I`m sorry but my knowledge of German is really pore ...
I don`t understand almost nothing , but thank you for the info it`s helpful in every way possible.

Back to the project :

Swing arm primed :

I still have a couple more hours of work on the frame , stripping down rust and paint , when i finish that prime it and paint it i will post some
more photos.
When i finish that i will start working on the fuel tank and rest of the body.

As said before, you may get an original one (Asso) from Bob Wright. At least i got mine from him last year or so. Price was about 100Euro :(

What i could offer is the GOL piston. I will take some pics when i'm at home nex t weekend.
Maybe you could also buy this one at a local shop.
Marco also has said something about a source for pistons in italy.
Maybe he will join this discussion....

ciao Joachim

PS Gottfried Hahnes pages are also available in english

In the next few days i will start working on the fuel tank and other pieces of the body , i have a lot of work on that field .

BTW did you have a look at your engine number?
The GFR frame number should start with '167'
The GFR engine number should start with'166'
Just to make shure that it is a GFR engine ;)

the vin number starts with 167 and the engine number with 166 so it`s a GFR for sure :D

Hi Coki,
Your gfr is coming along very nicely and is no longer a piece of 'crap' you don't happen to have a Nordwest engine to try to see how it fits in the frame for me to see
I have long time Serbian friend here in Nigeria with an Aprilia Millie.
Keep the pictures of the rebuild coming we are all waiting to see the end result.
Regards
John
